How to Get Red Wine Out of Your Carpet

One way or another it’s happened to all of us: the stress of trying to get red wine out of your carpet.

If it hasn’t happened to you yet, it will at some point. Whether it’s spilling a few drops of wine after a couple glasses late at night, having a guest do it in the middle of a party or having a glass tipped over by a child or a pet. Red wine stains are the bane of every carpet owner’s life.

These kinds of stains are notoriously difficult to get rid of all the way. It’s even harder for those who don’t know how to go about it.

The Situation to Get Red Wine Out of Your Carpet

Let’s look at the guest scenario as an example. The first thing you’re supposed to do in that situation is to grab some paper towels and blot away as much of the wine as possible. It might be inconvenient in the middle of a party that’s still in full swing.

However, if you leave the wine to dry and settle into the carpet it will be much more difficult to get it out later. It really is worth it to go through the trouble of blotting as soon as possible. It shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes at most.

The steps we will talk about below should all be carried out as soon as possible after the spill has occurred. If you want a chance at returning your carpet to its’ former glory.

Steps to Get Red Wine Out of Your Carpet

  • Blot the stain as soon as possible. You can use paper towels or a white cloth if you have it. The more wine you are able to blot away before it’s absorbed the less noticeable the stain will be. Also, the easier it will be for you to get rid of completely. Be sure never to scrub instead of blot. This will have the opposite effect and actually push the wine deeper into the carpet and settle in.
  • Pour a small amount of cold water on the stain. After you’re done blotting adding cold water to the stain will dilute the wine still left in the carpet, and help blot more of it away. Be careful not to pour too much in at a time, and continue blotting. Add more cold water in a small amount every time the cloth has stopped picking up liquid. Keep doing this until no more of the stain comes off on the cloth.
  • Apply a baking soda paste onto the stain. You can make a baking soda paste by mixing together 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water. Put this paste onto the stain directly and wait until it has completely dried. You can simply vacuum the paste away afterward.
  • Use a carpet cleaning solution. If the stain still remains after the previous steps you can use a carpet cleaning shampoo. Each solution comes with its own set of instructions. Most of the time it is best to apply the paste after adding some water, and vacuuming it off once it’s dry.

Tips and Tricks to Get Red Wine Out of Your Carpet

  • It’s a good idea to always test out a new cleaning solution in a hidden section of the carpet before using it on your stain first. So you can be sure it works properly.
  • If you’re entertaining guests and don’t have the time to spend blotting the carpet fully, blot off the still unabsorbed wine, and sprinkle some salt over the stain. Some more wine will be absorbed by the salt. Vacuum this once the guests have left then follow the steps above.
